Introduction of COVD and VSI

The College of Optometrists in Vision Development or COVD is a non-profit, international membership association of eye care professionals including optometrists, optometry students, and vision therapists.

Established in 1971, COVD provides board certification for optometrists and vision therapists who are prepared to offer state-of-the-art services in:

  • Behavioral and developmental vision care
  • Vision therapy
  • Visual rehabilitation (Source: COVD website)

The Vision Science Institute or VSI is a non-stock, non-profit organization dedicated to provide quality clinical optometry education and post-graduate training with emphasis on optometry sub-specialty areas. This will enable optometrists to offer a wider range of products and services to patients with specific needs. The VSI is a PRC-accredited CPD Provider since 2013.

About Optometric Vision Therapy

Unlike other forms of exercise, the goal of Optometric Vision Therapy is not to strengthen eye muscles. Optometric Vision Therapy should not be confused with any self-directed program of eye exercises, whichis or has been marketed to the public. Optometric vision therapy is supported by ongoing evidence-based scientific research. (Source: COVD website)

Vision Therapy 101 Course
The VSI brings to the Philippines the Vision Therapy 101, 102 and 103, a COVD (USA) certified course for vision therapists in the United States. Mr. Tom Headline, a certified optometric vision therapist or COVT and the COVD-accredited speaker for said course will personally
conduct the lecture and workshop. Tom brings with him decades of clinical experience in VT. The objective of VSI is to bring the cost of learning VT to a minimum (it costs at least $3,000 to attend VT 101 course in the US) to encourage optometrists to specialize in this area.

Certification & Fellow of COVD
Completing the 2-day VT 101 course will give the participant an opportunity to become a Fellow of the COVD by opting to go through a certification process prescribed by the COVD – the same process undertaken by international members around the world. Please
visit COVD website for more information on certification.

The VSI will guide the candidate throughout the certification process through its mentoring program by way of supervised clinical training and use of its training facility, combined course work and strategic review sessions.

COVD Certificates of Attendance
As proof that the course is recognized by the College of Optometrist in Vision Development, Mr. Tom Headline will award COVD certificates of attendance to participants at the end of the course.

If you want to improve lives and do more for your patients, practice vision development/ therapy. It has been proven that an  optometrist trained in vision therapy can do more than just refraction and eyeglasses. Vision therapy treats binocular vision anomalies and can also be the mode of intervention in helping children with behavioral and developmental problems, learning disabilities, stroke and traumatic brain injury (TBI) patients and other similar conditions. While vision therapy expands your market base, it also gives you that rare chance to make a difference by improving people’s lives.
